Art & Design

Intent

At Milstead & Frinsted C of E Primary School, our Art curriculum embodies our dedication to nurturing a compassionate, inclusive community wherein each pupil is encouraged to explore their individual creative potential. We are committed to meeting the diverse needs of our pupils, ensuring that every moment within the classroom is thoughtfully designed to cultivate a rich learning environment. Our overarching aim is to empower inquisitive learners who not only thrive creatively but also develop a profound understanding of the various artists and artistic genres that have shaped our cultural landscape.

Implementation

Rooted in the Christian values of Compassion, Stewardship, Inquiry, and Resilience, our Art curriculum adopts an inquiry-based approach to learning. This methodology empowers pupils to delve into the world of Art, fostering both artistic appreciation and the acquisition of a comprehensive range of artistic skills. We strive to instil an enduring sense of enjoyment and curiosity about art, illuminating its capacity to inspire creativity, facilitate reflection, and encourage collaboration among peers.

Our curriculum is intentionally designed to be inclusive, with a keen focus on integrating Art with other subjects whenever feasible. This interdisciplinary approach allows for meaningful connections to be made with prior knowledge, thus deepening understanding and ensuring that our pupils receive a broad and balanced exposure to Art. We are committed to providing diverse opportunities for artistic expression, whether it be through painting, sculpture, digital media, or other creative forms, thus appealing to a wide array of learning styles.

Central to our instructional philosophy is our teaching and learning policy, which focuses on the principles of Revisit, Teach, Practice, and Apply. This structured approach enables us to uphold high expectations for all pupils while managing cognitive overload, thereby promoting deep, lasting learning outcomes. Through active engagement and ongoing practice, we aim to bolster not only artistic skills but also critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, essential components for success in any creative endeavour.

Impact

In addressing the impact of our Art curriculum, it is crucial to observe that our ultimate goal is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to become the artists of the future. We recognise that involvement in the arts contributes significantly to a pupil's overall well-being, fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. Engaging in creative pursuits enables pupils to express their thoughts and emotions, providing an outlet for self-exploration and personal growth.

Moreover, we hope that by nurturing these artistic talents, our pupils will develop a lifelong appreciation for art, understanding its vital role in society as a means of communication, cultural reflection, and community building. As they progress through their educational journey, we expect our pupils to carry forward this appreciation, enriching their lives and the lives of others through their creative contributions.

In summary, the vision for Art at Milstead & Frinsted C of E Primary School is anchored in our values and commitment to inclusivity, creativity, and personal development. Through our carefully crafted curriculum, we aspire to not only develop skilled artists but also compassionate individuals who value the transformative power of art in their lives and in the world around them.
