Intent
At the heart of our French curriculum lies a commitment to compassion and nurture, fostering growth not only as individuals but as a collective. We believe in learning together, ensuring that every member receives the support they need, thereby maximising every opportunity and ensuring no moment is wasted. Our school aims to empower inquisitive stewards of the future who continually give and grow. Just as Jesus blessed the food and it multiplied, may we continue to multiply and thrive—spiritually, emotionally, and academically.
Our French scheme of work reflects our intent to instil a profound love for language learning and an appreciation for diverse cultures. We aspire for our pupils to develop the confidence necessary to communicate in French for practical purposes, both in written and spoken forms. This foundation in language learning enables pupils to apply their skills to further language studies, fortifying their understanding of the English language and broadening their future educational and employment opportunities across different countries.
Implementation
The Kapow French scheme of work incorporates six integral strands: speaking and pronunciation, listening, reading and writing, grammar, intercultural understanding, and language detective skills. Each unit is meticulously mapped against national curriculum attainment targets, ensuring that every strand is adequately covered. With a solid progression of skills and knowledge, our scheme guides pupils toward achieving the end-of-Key Stage 2 targets.
Employing a spiral curriculum approach, key skills and vocabulary are revisited with increasing complexity, allowing pupils to build upon their previous learning. Cross-curricular links are interlinked throughout our French units, facilitating connections and the application of language skills across various subjects. Lessons incorporate diverse teaching strategies, ranging from independent tasks to collaborative role-play, language games, and investigative activities that enhance engagement.
Differentiated guidance ensures accessibility and enjoyment of lessons for all pupils. Additionally, we support retention of French learning through daily classroom integration. To enhance the delivery of our languages curriculum, teacher videos accompany each unit, providing vital subject knowledge and ongoing professional development.
Impact
The anticipated impact of the Kapow Primary French scheme is that pupils will be equipped with a robust range of language-learning skills, enabling confident study of French or any other language at Key Stage 3. Ultimately, children will engage in purposeful dialogue, read with increasing accuracy, demonstrate understanding of spoken language, utilise bilingual dictionaries, identify grammatical structures, and construct coherent texts on familiar topics, meeting the end-of-Key Stage 2 expectations outlined by the National Curriculum for Languages.
