Geography

At Milstead & Frinsted C of E Primary School, our Geography curriculum embodies a deep commitment to nurturing a compassionate, caring, and inquisitive learning community. Through a focus on curiosity, exploration, and understanding, we aim to inspire our pupils to think like geographers. Our intent is to provide every child with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to question, observe, and understand the world around them.

We believe that Geography is integral in shaping how we interact with our environment on both a local and global scale. Our curriculum encourages pupils to measure, record, analyse, and present geographical data in a variety of ways, fostering an awareness of how geographical features and human activities have changed and developed over time. By doing so, we equip our pupils with the knowledge to appreciate how Geography impacts everyday life, helping them become responsible and resourceful citizens who can positively contribute to the world.

Through our inclusive, inquiry-based approach, we empower all learners, ensuring that no opportunity is wasted. We embrace diverse learning styles by incorporating a range of teaching strategies, from independent tasks to group activities, and through a mix of hands-on, computer-based, and collaborative learning. This variety keeps lessons engaging and ensures that every child’s needs are met.

Our curriculum is firmly rooted in our Christian values of Compassion, Stewardship, Inquiry, and Resilience, which guide both our approach and content. We place great importance on making connections with prior learning and integrating Geography with other subjects to create a rich, interconnected curriculum. The Geography curriculum is implemented through our teaching and learning policy (Revisit, Teach, Practice, Apply), which maintains high expectations for all pupils while helping to manage cognitive overload and ensure a deep, lasting understanding.

Fieldwork is a key component of our Geography curriculum, providing pupils with opportunities to apply their skills in real-world settings. We offer frequent, manageable fieldwork opportunities on school grounds, helping pupils build confidence in evaluating geographical methodologies within a familiar context. This lays a solid foundation for later visits to explore more diverse physical and human geographical features beyond the school.

Ultimately, our aim is to create inquisitive, thoughtful, and compassionate stewards of the future, equipped with the knowledge and skills to engage with the world in a meaningful and responsible way.
