History

At Milstead & Frinsted C of E Primary School, our History curriculum reflects our commitment to creating a compassionate and nurturing learning environment. We strive to meet the diverse needs of all our pupils, ensuring that every opportunity for learning is maximized and that no moment is wasted. Our aim is to empower inquisitive, thoughtful learners who are curious about the past and equipped to understand its relevance to the present and future.

Rooted in our Christian values of Compassion, Stewardship, Inquiry, and Resilience, our History curriculum encourages pupils to think critically, ask questions, and engage in hands-on historical enquiries. Lessons are varied, engaging, and designed to spark creativity and curiosity, helping pupils develop a deep understanding of local, national, and world history. By fostering a complex knowledge of significant events, individuals, and the changes that have shaped history, we aim to develop confident and reflective thinkers who can analyse and explain historical evidence with clarity.

Our inclusive curriculum places a strong emphasis on making connections with prior learning and, where possible, integrating History with other subjects to create a rich, interconnected experience. Through our teaching and learning policy (Revisit, Teach, Practice, Apply), we ensure that high expectations are upheld for all pupils while minimizing cognitive overload, enabling deep and sustained learning.

We aim to build pupils' understanding of chronology, helping them to make connections across different time periods and develop a secure, chronological knowledge of History. Pupils will learn about significant global, British, and local events and figures, appreciating the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies, and the relationships between different groups. Our curriculum introduces key substantive concepts such as power, invasion, settlement and migration, empire, civilisation, religion, trade, achievements of humankind, society, and culture, providing a foundation for deeper historical understanding.

Our goal is to nurture the next generation of historians, equipping pupils with the skills to carry out their own historical enquiries and to appreciate how historians study the past and construct narratives. By fostering a passion for history, we hope to inspire pupils to become inquisitive stewards of the future, informed by the lessons of the past and motivated to make positive contributions to the world around them.
